I had never seen Sammy in concert and so I didn't know what to expect. I was in the 6th row from the stage and boy, he ROCK!! He put so much energy into his performance as if it was his last. He really seemed to enjoy himself and seemed to love the crowd. I would go see him again if he came. But please don't come back with David Lee Roth! He was crude, plastic like. He seemed fakey. His expressions, the way he touched himself, he had no repore with the audience. So Sammy come back by yourself if you have to, your fans will be there!!!!

I have finally recovered from my day long hangover after the Sammy/DLR show in VA Beach and wanted to drop a line about the show. Bottom line is........ Sammy and the Waboritas ROCK! It all started the Friday before the show. I got a call from my best friend (who lives out of town) who asked me what my plans were on Monday. I knew then and there what he had in mind. What I did not know I was that the tickets were to be one of the "Tequila Bar" participants. I was standing in the 1st row of the bleachers on the right hand side of the stage. I even had my 30 seconds of fame (more about that later). Thanks to my buddies Austin & Eddie for inviting me to the show. Tequila shots are on me!
Before the show started, we were gathered behind the stage and I happened to be standing beside a door with a window. The next thing I see is Sammy poking his locks in the window and screaming! I knew this was going to be a night I would never forget. As we were escorted onto the stage, I had to stop and pinch myself. I could not believe I was standing in front of ~20,000 screaming fans.
Sammy came out on stage and started with some of his, and my favorites, from his solo days. His voice was incredible. He literally had the entire place on their feet screaming at the top of their lungs. I was very impressed with his band. They were ON that night. Unlike Dave, Sammy is a true entertainer in all sense of the word. They were both on the stage for about 90 minutes and Sammy played about 14 songs compared to 18 or so for Dave (we left after six songs and were not alone!!!). Sammy had the perfect mix of songs from his solo career and time with VH. In between each song Sammy would talk to the crowd, drink margaritas, and share personal experiences from his career. Dave would just bust into the next song. Personally, I believe an entertainer should do more than just sing a bunch of songs and then walk off stage.
The folks on the cantina rocked the house. We were splashing water all over each other on that hot steamy night. Sammy even partook in the festivities when he came on stage. What a party!
Now, the great part. During the last encore, Sammy closed his set with "Dreams" (without a doubt my favorite VH song). The stage manager led us down the bleachers and onto the stage. My buddy ran to Sammy and gave him a bear hug. I ran up and stood beside them. There was Sammy...two feet from me. I could not believe it. As the song was about to end Sammy put his arm around me and shared the mike... Together we sang "AND IN THE END ON DREAMS WE WILL DEPEND CAUSE THAT'S WHAT LOVE IS MADE OF" Then this is where the story begins to differ... My buddy says I grabbed the mike, but I think Sammy handed it to me.... and I sang "I'VE GOT MY DREAMS YOU'VE GOT YOUR DREAMS"
I would love to get pictures (blonde guy wearing the "Red Rocker 2002 Itinerary T-Shirt). If anyone has them, please send them my way ([email protected]) If anyone else saw this, please e-mail me and let me know your version. All I can say is WOW.... What a dream that was... Karaoke in front of ~20,000 screaming fans with the greatest rocker of all time!
Six of us have planned a trip to Cabo San Lucas for Sammy's birthday bash. I would love to learn how to get tickets (besides standing in line). Who knows, maybe if I am lucky, Sammy would do a VA Beach reunion song with me. I promise to provide more entertainment than DLR!!!
Gracias Sammy - My dream became a reality!
